In podcast episode 46, Andrew discusses how trash-talking can negatively impact relationships and careers in the workplace.

He presents the story of Netra, an employee who makes rude and unpleasant remarks about her co-workers, including Geraldine.

Geraldine is upset by Netra's comments and confides in Elizabeth, who advises her to be more direct with Netra. Geraldine confronts Netra when she makes a remark about her clothing, telling her to stop making personal comments.

Other employees also start to confront Netra about her behaviour, and her supervisor ultimately issues her a verbal warning.

In the second story, Andrew discusses the true story of General Stanley McChrystal. President Obama dismissed the general after he and his aides publicly criticised the president and other senior US officials.

Andrew notes that trash-talking used to be confined to competition but has become more prevalent in workplaces due to cultural factors.

He advises you to avoid trash-talking and recognise that such talk often reveals more about the speaker than those being trashed.

Andrew also notes that managers and supervisors may only sometimes respond well to complaints about trash-talking. Often they tend to duck the issue.

Andrew provides tips for those who have engaged in trash-talking. These include offering a sincere apology and owning up to the offence. Rather than offer excuses or justifications, instead find ways to make amends.

Andrew explains that trash-talking can harm careers by sapping morale and creating a hostile work environment.

Finally, he emphasises the importance of avoiding trash-talking involving disrespect, racism, sexual aggression, ageism, and other forms of discrimination.
