In this final podcast of Series 2 50, Andrew explores the importance of integrity in building a solid reputation.

He starts by recounting the Tylenol crisis of 1982. The US company Johnson and Johnson faced a crisis when someone laced Tylenol capsules with cyanide causing several deaths.

Despite the potential impact on the company's profits, CEO James Burke prioritised the safety of consumers and integrity. The company conducted a massive product recall and relaunched Tylenol in tamper-proof packaging, demonstrating its commitment to doing the right thing.

Burke's actions and integrity saved the company's reputation and eventually restored Tylenol's market share.

Andrew defines integrity as holding oneself to a high moral standard and doing what's right, even in unpopular circumstances. He emphasises that integrity and honesty go hand in hand and are essential for gaining respect at work.

You can demonstrate integrity by keeping promises, speaking honestly, taking responsibility, and supporting organisational values.

Although integrity doesn't guarantee success, it increases the chances of success and fosters respect and trust from others. It also contributes to a harmonious work environment, strengthens morale, opens career opportunities, and positively impacts personal life.

When faced with an ethically wrong request at work, Andrew advises against complying with illegal actions.

Instead, he suggests understanding the situation by asking clarifying questions. Requesting instructions in writing can help ensure clarity and protect you and the organisation.

Andrew encourages you to trust your gut instincts. For example, would you be proud to share your decisions or choices with loved ones?

He concludes by recommending three actions: clarifying personal values, understanding organisational integrity rules, and being cautious when challenging others on their integrity.

The key takeaway is that integrity is a crucial behaviour to exhibit at work. It builds reputation and personal brand, contributes to success, and creates a positive work environment.

By upholding high moral standards, acting honestly, and making ethical choices, you can demonstrate integrity and positively impact their professional and personal lives.
